Ohio Elementary Students Get “Caught Eating Fruits and Vegetables”

Posted on 04/25/2012

Westwood Elementary in Wellington, Ohio, has found some fun new ways to get students excited about eating their fruits and vegetables. Physical education teacher, Kristy Holliday, created and performs the Broccoli Dance, Sweet Potato Dance and other

vegetable dances when she sees that students have eaten all the vegetables on their trays. Students are now taking and eating their vegetables just so they can see Mrs. Holliday dance.

The cafeteria also features a new “Caught Eating Fruits and Vegetables” bulletin board. When students are “caught” eating their produce, they can have their pictures posted on the board. One student per grade is picked as the fruit and vegetable student of the week. Students love it!

These days, the cafeteria staff doesn’t have to beg students to eat their fruits and vegetables – kids are asking for them. One student came through the line saying, “I want some of that broccoli so I can see Mrs. Holliday dance and get my picture up on the bulletin board.” The dishwasher is seeing less fruits and vegetables coming back on trays too.

Getting the gym teacher to help with healthy eating and exercise sure has made a hit with your district. High five to you, Mrs. Holliday and all your customers! Wellington is going to be one slim, trim and healthy town!
