Pennsylvania Schools Put the Spotlight on Fresh Produce

Posted on 11/28/2011

In Mt. Lebanon School cafeterias fresh fruits and vegetables are the main attraction. The Pennsylvania school district’s new elementary lunch program features unlimited fruit and vegetable choices, the middle schools are sporting new salad bars and the high school offers daily entrée salads and delicious specialty choices like Broccoli Salad, Three Bean Salad and Orange Fennel Salad.

Last spring, the Mt. Lebanon cafeterias celebrated Tropical Fruit week, offering fresh selections including mango, papaya, and kiwi, alongside vegetable choices like asparagus and snap peas. The district also launched a Farm of the Month program, allowing students to taste locally grown seasonal foods. Recent specials include Heirloom Tomatoes (September), Zucchini and Squash (October) and Apples (November).
