If you visit Arden Elementary School in Columbia, South Carolina you are sure to be impressed by the good manners the students display in the cafeteria and throughout the school! Arden Elementary is one of six schools participating in the Silver Spoon Program in Richland School District One. The program, developed and implemented by Student Nutrition Services (SNS), supports the district’s character education curriculum by rewarding students who practice good behavior and etiquette.
Students are encouraged to exercise their best behavior in the cafeteria and throughout the school. One class is selected each month for exemplary etiquette and is recognized with a 2 ½ foot long silver spoon to display on the classroom door, a certificate and a mention in the school and district newsletter. In addition, the winning class and their parents are treated to a special luncheon hosted by the school principal and SNS staff members. Lunch is served on china with silver flatware and linen napkins. The luncheon is made even more special with the decorating assistance of volunteers from the Union United Methodist Church, a partner who also provides funds for the purchase of the decorations.
Since the program started in 2005, participating schools have noticed improved classroom and cafeteria behavior and students have become very competitive in their efforts to earn the coveted Silver Spoon!
In addition to promoting a healthy school environment, the SNS at Richland School District One also serve-up healthy menu options for the students. Fresh fruit, whole wheat bread and salads are offered daily. Throughout the week, the menu features delicious and healthful entrees and sides such as oven roasted chicken with brown rice, whole wheat pasta with meat sauce, whole grain quesadillas and a variety of steamed and raw vegetables.
