The students of Smithville Elementary School in Smithville, Texas are contributing a bounty of fresh produce to their school cafeteria. Made possible with community donations, the 5th grade Junior Harvesters built a school garden; planting and tending to everything from spinach and strawberries to tomatoes and thyme.
These young gardeners are not only helping to stock the cafeteria salad bar; they have also sponsored taste tests for their classmates! Sample dishes include lettuce and spinach wraps, pickled onions and leeks, kale chips and lemon grass tea. One student asked for a copy of the recipes to take home to Mom.
Thanks to the district’s Chef to School program, these students have worked with a local chef to learn more about healthy meal preparation methods, like using fresh herbs to season dishes. The Child Nutrition Department is thrilled to be partnering with their gardeners to help all students acquire healthy tastes to last a lifetime.

It is good to see sites such as tray talk. With site like tray talk you get to see all the positive work being done by the school food service workers. No exploitation of a certain group for ones on personal financial gain. Keep up the good work ….yea go sna food service.
